When crossing into Austria from another EU state (on 28 April 1995, Austria signed the Schengen Agreement), there are only occassional checks at the border. You may now import your purchases, made in the enlarged EU, without having to pay any charges or customs duties. As has been the case so far with imports from Germany or Italy, you are allowed to bring any of your personal belongings or articles of use to Austria, without having to pay customs duties or other charges in Austria.

There are however some limitations on importing tobacco products from neighboring countries: When coming to Austria by car or ship, the ceiling of 25 cigarettes continues to apply. Limited quantities also apply when importing tobacco products from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, or when you arrive by plane from one of the adjoining new states.
