    Rio is the perfect paradise for luxury and that includes a multitude of shopping venues. Whether you are interested in high-end designer clothing, independent boutiques, or open market indigenous art, Rio has it all.

    Stores are generally open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm with two hours for lunch, usually from noon to 2:00pm. Some stores, especially grocery stores, are open 24 hours.

    Shopping Centers

    Siqueira Campos- One of Rio's first shopping centers, this area has a mix of original crafts, antiques, and hand-crafted jewelry. There is also an art gallery, pet shop, and supermarket.

    Barra Shopping- This is Rio's biggest shopping center and one of the largest in Latin America with 577 stores spread over 120,000 meters. It also has cinemas, restaurants, an indoor theme park and a bowling alley. Over 25 million shoppers visit Barra every year.

    Praia Shopping (Botafogo)- This is the largest shopping store in Botafogo. It has some of the best designer shops.

    Markets

    The Babilonia Hype Fair- Located at the Jockey Club, this market has many different stalls selling products. From decorative art, to hippie wear, to piercing salons, it's all here.

    The Hippie Fair - This sprawling street market is set-up every Sunday in the city square. Clothing, leather goods, arts and jewelry are all available. This is an excellent place to get a true Brazilian momento.

    Pé de Boi - Artifacts from Brazil and many of the neighbouring countries are available here. This is an excellent place to buy rare handicrafts.

    Specialty

    Modern Sound - Located in Copacabana, this is a music store with a vast collection. The store also offers the latest equipment in music like home theaters.

    Maria Oiticica - An amazing assortment of jewellery and silverware can be found here. The jewellery is made from Brazilian trees and Amazonian fibres and the shop is known for being environment friendly.

    Constança Basto - This is the place to go to buy shoes in Rio. It has celebrity clientele and tends to be fairly expensive.

    Note about safety: The city center after commercial hours can be quite dangerous. This area should not be traversed alone after 7 PM on weekdays, Saturdays after 4 Pm and on Sundays.
