Cinema

Czech cinema began with Jan Krizenecky. The first Czech film-maker, he first exhibited at the Architecture and Engineering Exhibition in June 1898 three short comic films known as "Cesky Kinematograf". The industry has built slowly, like many places, not able to compete with Hollywood films. Some Czech film studios have become known for their work in the field of animation and puppet films. Interestingly, the 2006 James Bond film- Casino Royale was primarily shot at Barrandov Studios in Prague.

There are a range of cinemas in the city, from the Indian art house, to the international mega-theatres. Most show Western movies in their original language with Czech subtitles. Average ticket price ranges from 100 CZK to 200 CZK.

Nightclubs

Beer is drunk morning, afternoon and night which makes finding a place to order a brew easy. Different venues offer different vibes with the Old Town offering loads of approachable, but often touristy, bars. Czech beers are regarded as some of the best, and cheapest, in the world meaning you will have trouble going too wrong in this city. Notable brands include: Pilsner Urquell, Gambrinus, Staropramen and Budweiser (Budvar).

The average wage for bar staff tends to be low (about 50Kc an hour), so tipping is appreciated. About 10% is acceptable.

An upscale place that focuses on a well made drink. This is the place to spend some cash, enjoy a cocktail, and fell like James Bond in Casino Royale.

Klub Lavka
Indoor/outdoor space with two dance floors, seven bars, and outdoor garden. The riverside terrace allows clubbers to watch the pedestrians on the Charles Bridge.

An alternative to the intense club scene, this place has a small cellar bar comprised of four art-decked rooms. great location in the middle of Stare Mesto.

Bordo
From hip hop to indie rock, this place books a variety of live acts.

Karlovy Lazne
Not to be missed, this mega club is multi level with a magnificent view of the Vltava River and Charles Bridge. Bottom of the house has typical club house music, upstairs has 70s disco, further up there is mellow electronica, and rock is played at the top.

M1
Grey and industrial looking, the sign outside blatantly states "No Stag Parties". A chill lounge in which to down a pilsner and chat with friends.

Vertigo
A pleasant cafe transforms at night. Electro and trance music are played with some of the best DJs in town spinning. Theme nights are popular.

Very popular club located in the center. Often crowded with tourists, it is convenient.
