There are 3 networks in France: Orange, SFR and Bouygues. You can choose to go for 2 different tariffs:

    - Pay monthly (forfait): The majority of people in the France pay their mobile phone monthly easily by direct debit as they would with electricity and gas. An average price is 30 € for 2-3 hours of calling depending on the tariff (you can choose from 1 hour to 10 hours of calling) and the company. You can ask for different additional options like “international calls”, “bill with details”... All additional calls exceeding the package are charged at about 30 cents per minute. Voicemail is free.

    - Pay as you go (sans abonnement): They are called Mobicarte at Orange’s, Nomad at Bouygue’s, Entrée Libre at SFR’s. The price is about 20 € for 90 minutes.

You can get a lot of information at The Phone House centres (http://www.phonehouse.com/).

I got LeFrenchMobile, it's all in English and I can call back the US for cheap. They have cheap tariffs for other destinations too

    pay as you go
After much searching I was able to find out that texting home to Australia is not allowed on the Orange network's mobicarte, while I know you can on SFR at 0.30 euros a text.
