Norway is one of the healthiest countries in the world. The average life expectancy is seventy-eight years. Modern medicine has replaced folk medicine and a government influence on social health has helped make Norway happy and healthy.

Register into the National Registry (folkeregister) as a resident of a Norwegian municipality should allow you to be assigned a regular GP (fastlege) by your local 'NAV' office. For more information, call 810 59 500.

Once at the doctor's office, you may sit down and wait for the doctor to call your name. It is not necessary to see the receptionist first. You may pay the doctor directly once the examination is concluded.

    Private Care Doctors

Many Norwegian doctors (lege) have their own private practices. You can find them by checking the yellow pages. You may also call the Bydel (your section of the city) for recommendations. Clients should be able to call the office directly and set-up an appointment. Most doctor's offices are open from 8:00 to 15:00.

    Dental Care

Dental care for adults has no public option. Most Norwegian dentists have their own private practices and can be found in the yellow pages under Tannleger (Dentists).

Under 18 year old are entitled to free public dental treatment (excluding orthodontic treatment). Children are able to see the kommunal dentist office at age 3. The appointments may be set-up automatically and an appointment card sent in the mail. Be sure to reply to the card if you are unable to make your appointment.

Emergency Dental care can be reached be contacting Tannlegevakten (open outside of normal office hours. Senter, Kolstadgt 18, 0653 Oslo. Tel: 22 67 30 00) and Oslo Private Tannlegevakt (Hansteensgt. 3, Tel: 22 44 46 36).

    Expatriate health insurance in Norway

With so much to deal with before leaving your home country, (taxes, moving house, paperwork etc.) the careful planning of your expatriation to Oslo is an essential step. As far as healthcare is concerned, your local social security scheme won’t be accompanying you to your host country and, once abroad, you might be surprised by the care system you find in Norway. So, before leaving, make sure you have appropriate cover!
