    Shopaholics will rejoice in the bounties that Munich has to offer. From top international brands to traditional Bavarian crafts, you’ll find it all in Munich. Some of the main shopping areas in Munich are:

    Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufingerstrasse: These two streets are the city’s main shopping arteries and are home to large department stores and international chains.

    Maximilianstrasse and Theatinerstrasse: This is the place to be if you’re looking for smaller, more exclusive boutiques

    Schellingstrasse, Maxvorstadt: A shopping paradise packed with antique shops and bookshops

    Typical Bavarian gifts might include traditional clothing (Trachten), such as Lederhosen for men and Dirndl for women; beer mugs (Stein); wood carvings (Holzschnitzereien); pewter-ware (Zinn); the famous Nymphenburg porcelain and specialty foods such as Lebkuchen, Christmas Stollen, and marzipan.

    Larger shops, department stores and supermarkets are generally open from

    Monday - Friday: 09.00 - 20.00
    Saturday: 09.00 - 16.00

    Smaller shops open for shorter hours:

    Monday - Friday: 09.00 - 18.30 and may close for lunch
    Saturday: 09.00 - 12.00

    If that’s not enough, here’s another reason to shop in Munich. Mehrwertsteuer (VAT) of 16% is included in the price of purchased items and visitors from non-EU countries are entitled to a tax refund of up to 10%. Participating stores display a Europe Tax-Free logo.

    There are three big shopping malls in Munich that offers

    • Einkaufs-Centrum Neuperlach – This huge mall locate din the east of Munich has about 120 shops that sell everything from furniture to shoes and clothes.
    • Riem Arcaden – This mall is home to 120 shops on 3 floors. Only seven kilometres away from the city-centre this huge mall is situated in Messestadt Ost and is easily reached by subway and car.
