Germany is surrounded by countries from the European Union, and is part of
the Schengen area for freedom of movement. This makes travel really easy within
the Schengen area. Quite often, you won’t even feel like you’ve crossed a
border between two countries as you can just drive through two Schengan
countries. Also with the euro, you won’t even feel the change in currency.
If you are a member of the European Union, you won't
have any declaration to make when entering Germany.
As a general point, we will distinguish between a travel within the European
Union and outside the EU space.
Travel inside the country members of the EU
Passengers arriving with
goods purchased within the E.U. and for personal use only may import for free
800 cigarettes, 400 cigarillos (max. 3g each), 200 cigars, 1kg of smoking
tobacco; 10 liters of spirits over 22%, 20 litres of alcoholic beverages less
than 22%, 90 litres of wine (though no more than 60 litres of sparkling wine),
110 litres of beer.
Immigrant coming from a non-member state of the EU
Passengers arriving from non-E.U. countries (incl. Canary Islands, Channel
Islands, and other similar territories) and are aged 17 years or older may
import for free 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of
smoking tobacco; 1 litre of spirits over 22% volume, or 2 litres of spirits or
aperitifs made of wine or similar beverages less than 22% volume, or sparkling
wines or liquor wines, or 2 litres of still wines. For passengers aged 15 years
and over 500g of coffee, or 200g of coffee extract, or 100g of tea, or 40g of
tea extract. Regardless of age 50g of perfume, 250ml of eau de toilette, and
other goods up to a total value of EUR 175.-.
Import of narcotics and unpreserved meat products is prohibited. Other
unpreserved items of food must be declared.
