Mexico does not have any reciprocal health care agreements with any other country in the world so visitors must ensure that their medical insurance will pay for any medical requirements they have in Mexico. Not all policies cover health insurance in Mexico, visitors need to check with their insurance company. European plans do not usually offer coverage in Mexico. Some US and Canadian health plans provide (usually limited) health coverage in Mexico, but not all.

Travel insurance is a good answer to this that ensures the safety and worry-free nature of your trip. Without appropriate travel insurance, you may be exposed to significant financial liability. Visitors must buy travel insurance in your country of residence. It can be purchased at airports and convenience stores, but at a higher premium than if you buy ahead of time, online.

    Expatriate health insurance in Mexico

With so much to deal with before leaving your home country, (taxes, moving house, paperwork etc.) the careful planning of your expatriation to Mexico City is an essential step. As far as healthcare is concerned, your local social security scheme won’t be accompanying you to your host country and, once abroad, you might be surprised by the care system you find in Mexico. So, before leaving, make sure you have appropriate cover!
