International healthcare, medical insurance in Luxembourg

Health insurance is mandatory in Luxembourg. Foreigners who are living but not working in Luxembourg must produce proof of health insurance in order to obtain a residence permit. The Luxembourg heath insurance system requires anyone working in the country to contribute to the national plan. It is not possible to only purchase private insurance. If you require additional coverage, supplementary insurance is available.

Healthcare is covered by the health offices (Caisses des Maladie). Employers must register their employee within eight days of starting work. Then, a form is sent to the employee requesting details of who is to be included on the plan. Once the form has been returned to the CCSS, a social security card (Carte de Sécurité Sociale) is issued to the insured and each dependant by post. Plans are generally around 50 euros a month per person, but may cost up to 100 euros a month per person.

    Supplementary

Supplementary insurance is available from non-profit health insurance agencies or mutual associations (mutuelles). This type of insurance pays the portion of medical fees that isn't covered. It can also offer extended coverage for hospitalization; extras like a private rooms; eye care (spectacles and contact lenses); dental treatment and medical services outside Luxembourg. The cost of supplementary coverage is normally low, but it applies on a per person basis.

So, before leaving, make sure you have appropriate cover!
