Low bandwith/Modem

BT, AOL, Tiscali, Wanadoo and cable companies are offering low bandwith connections (dial-up) for about £15/month (surf illimited).

All of those companies offer as well fast broadband connection with ADSL.

Broadband ADSL

ADSL Broadband is by far the most popular choice of UK Broadband. It uses your existing telephone line for your Broadband connection. Nowadays you can receive your pack ready to plug by post. In addition to the modem that is often provided you will have filters (MicroFilter for Phonesockets) to put on your telephone socket to allow both use of the telephone and the broadband at the same time. Broadband is still expensive in UK. With an average of £25/month, you will find a lot of Broadband Providers (ISP) in the UK:

BT Broadband: £24.99 a month for 512 KbPs Broadband, contract 12 months minimum. Standard offers is £26.99 up to 512 kbps with BT Yahoo!

Tiscali Boradband: £24.99/month up to 512 kbps

Wanadoo: 1 Mbps for £22.99/month

You might think about going wireless. All of those providers offer WiFi packs for an optional price. Overwise you can also buy your modem at shops like dabs (Netgear or D-Link for example).

Broadband Cable

Cable Broadband uses a special cable connection which needs to be installed into your home. You must check that it is available in your area (you will need to live in an area that can receive Cable), and an operator will need to come to your house to install the cable.
Your package will include most of the time digital TV channels and phone line (unlimited telephone package for a fixed monthly cost) as well:

NTL: 750 kbps Broadband Internet for £24.99 per month

Telewest: 750 kbps for £25 per month

HomeChoice: 1Mb broadband plus TV and unlimited anytime calls costs £42/month

Television

In addition to aerial TV and cable TV (that we saw above with Internet access) you can buy a Freeview box (which you can get from around £60 at your local electrical retailer) that will give you a lot more TV channels.

When you move home, you need to transfer your TV licence to your new address. If you don’t, you won’t be properly covered. If you use a TV and you don’t have a licence, you could face prosecution. A colour licence 2000 cost is £104. The fine is up to £1000.
