    Water

Johannesburg Water, the city's water and sanitation utility, was established as an independent company with the City as sole shareholder in 2001. Its services are provided along recognized business principles, ensuring customer satisfaction and cost recovery, and its testing laboratories are accredited with the South African National System, or Sanas, to maintain standards. The utility operates six wastewater treatment works, with a combined process capacity of 900 mega litres per day, 38 sewer pumping stations and 9 600 kilometres of sewer pipelines, stretching from Midrand to Ennerdale. The electro-mechanical maintenance department, located within the operations division, is responsible for ensuring that water towers, reservoirs and pump stations are functional 24 hours a day. Johannesburg Water is committed to improving services to the city's more than three million residents and establishing additional water connections in areas where these do not presently exist.

Johannesburg's tap water rates among the cleanest, safest and healthiest in the world. Johannesburg Water has three laboratories that test between 400 and 500 samples each month, ensuring that what comes out of the taps meets the high quality requirements of the SABS 241 (2001) Drinking Water Standard. To ensure the supply of quality water to consumers, Johannesburg Water maintains and operates 9 800 kilometres of water distribution pipes, 87 water reservoirs and 33 water towers. Johannesburg Water is also doing extensive and ongoing upgrades to its water and sewage networks.
