Turkey has a very complex health care system because of the
existence of different plans and departments involved in this sector. All
health care and related social welfare activities are coordinated by the
Ministry of Health. It is part of the law that every citizen has a right to
health care. Though the overall standard of health care has improved, care in
State hospitals has still to reach expected levels of quality. For more
information on benefits, go to the Social Security section.
Maternity allowance, paternity and parental leave
Maternity allowance is not as generous in Turkey as it is in the rest of Europe.
Working mothers can expect a maternity allowance of 12 weeks with a salary of
66.7%; the full salary is not paid.
New fathers on the other hand, can expect 3 days paid paternal leave if they
work in the public sector. The private sector has varying rules and leave
depends on the company and contract the person is employed at. No legal
requirement exists for unpaid maternal or paternal leave.
