Scotland has a variety of accommodations across the country and in the cities, but travellers should note that Edinburgh becomes overwhelmingly crowded during the main festival periods (August to early September). Around Hogmanay (New Year's Day / 1 January) is also a busy time with many hotels over booked. Visitors should book well in advance.

The cost of accommodation jumps during these high times, making Edinburgh- the most expensive place to stay in Scotland- even more expensive. Most mid-range hotels can be rented for about 80 GBP a night, although during the off season hotels can be found for as little as 25 GBP and 5-star accommodations can be as much as 285 GBP.

The highest concentrations of accommodations is around Newington Road and Minto Street on the South side, and on Pilrig Street and Newhaven Road in Leith.

Bed & Breakfast

A Bed & Breakfast can be an a refreshingly personal environment to explore a new city. Though a B&B may be more expensive then traditional hotels, occasionally they are cheaper then the surrounding locations given the inclusion of a meal and the luxury of the environment.

Bed & Breakfast accommodations are widely available, even in remote areas. Average price may be as little as 25 GBP per person, per night.

Local tourist information centres are the best resource for finding B&B's while travelling. The Scottish Guest House and Bed & Breakfast Association (GHABBA) can also help you find a wonderful B&B.
