International Schools

Thailand's international school system is large and varies according to fees and reputation. There are three tiers in the system. The higher fee schools, like NIST, are very expensive but schools in this Tier 1 category are considered the best. Tier 2 schools offer slightly reduced fees and include Bangkok Prep, RIS and TRAIL. Schools such as Ascot and Heathfield fall into Tier 3 and cater towards rich Thai families rather than expats. There are presently 65 international schools in Bangkok.

The curriculum must be approved by the Thai Ministry of Education, but the schools are free to differ from the national plan with some following the UK system, others the US system, and other the IB or a mixture. Families should look for ISAT and CoIS accreditation to gain an idea of how credible the school is. Care does need to be taken in Thailand as some schools are run just for profit. If a school is for profit based, find out who the backers are as this can have major implications for the way the school is run.

Managers and head teachers must be of Thai nationality, though often there will be a foreign head teacher overseeing the international curriculum and implementing the school policies.

Similar to the Thai public school system, most schools start between 7:30-8:00 until 14:00-15:00 with an extra hour of ECA (extracurricular activities). International schools may have different start and finishing times depending on the school. They will also have different holiday times, however if they follow an international timetable they are likely to have a six week holiday over July and August and the usual two week break over Christmas and Easter. Individual schools will be able to provide more details. In general, schools will also close for Thai national holidays.

The following documents are usually required to register your child with an international school:
