Emergencies in Romania

The phone number for all emergencies in Romania is 112. Depending on the type of emergency, you will be directed to the appropriate service, which will send an ambulance with qualified medical personnel. The ambulance department in Bucharet is known as Serviciul de Ambulanță București-Ilfov (SABIF) and operates throughout the metropolitan area.

Bucharest has also implemented a special service for emergencies which require paramedic staff, Serviciul Mobil de Urgență, Reanimare și Descarcerare (SMURD). However, this service is not authorized for emergencies requiring the presence of a qualified physician.

Private hospitals and clinics may also have their own private ambulance system.

Emergency medical care is provided for everybody at no cost in state institutions.

Pharmacy

Pharmacies can be found easily throughout Romania. Normal opening hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 - 18:00, and Saturday 8:00 - 12:00. However, there are many 24h pharmacies for emergency service, for a full list refer to the map of non-stop pharmacies in Bucharest.

Most drugs are available with subscription only, but there are a few generic drugs that can be purchased over the counter.

Prescription medicine is paid by the patient in most cases, except for a list of medicines that are partly covered by the medical insurance (medicamente compensate). However, due to low funding for such medicines, they are only available for pensioners and in a limited supply. When purchasing the prescription medicines from pharmacies, a valid health insurance card must be presented.
