Theatres in Lima

Lima offers a vibrant and active cultural scene for every taste. Among all its cultural activities, we can highlight its many theatres, where both classic plays and modern and experimental theatre, dramas, dance performances, are performed.

Most productions are in Spanish, but you might find some international plays in other language.

Important Theatres in Lima:

• Grand National Theatre of Perú (Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú): This is the most modern theatre in Lima's with high-tech sound and theatrical engineering.  
• Municipal Theatre (Teatro Municipal): Premiere theatre of Lima with performances, opera and ballet.
• Maguey Theatre (Teatro Maguey): Teatro Maguey is one of the most important theatre groups in the country. It offers a creative space to all age groups where to develop identity and imagination through art and theater.
• La Tarumba Circus - Theatre – Music for kids (La Tarumba Circo - Teatro – Musica): Founded in 1984, Tarumba has been recognized as the most entertaining theatre-circus in all Perú.
• Manuel Segura Theatre (Teatro Principal Manuel Segura): This is the oldest cultural institution in Latin America.
• Kusi Kusi Puppet Theatre for kids (Kusi Kusi Teatro de Titeres): The most important marionette theatre in Perú, with workshops for children, teens and adults.
• Yuyachkani Theatre (Teatro Yuyachkani): It is considered one of the most significant cultural centres in Lima. All its performances are based in spreading the Andean world culture.
• Lima Theatre Club (Club de Teatro de Lima): It has the oldest drama school in Lima.

Opera in Lima
The Gran Teatro Nacional del Perú opened in 2012 and it is the biggest and most modern theatre in Lima's cultural scene. With almost 1,500 seats, it is equipped with the newest technology in sound and theatrical system. It is home to Latin America's operas, concerts, ballets and Broadway shows.

For opera-lovers, EasyExpat recommends the Opera Festival Alejandro Granda, the most important opera event in South America. It features first-class singers, and the most outstanding productions in the region.

It is also home of the country's Symphony Orchestra, National Ballet and National Chorus, as well as three other companies.

The County's Symphony Orchestra is regularly based at the National Grand Theater, but it also offers concerts around the city and the country.

Museums in Lima
Lima has an excellent museum culture which examines it fusion with European and Moorish influences, mixed with the indigenous past and religious inheritance. All of this makes Lima one of the most interesting cultural cities in Latin America, with a huge archaeological, historical and cultural past that it's reflected in each of its museums.

The following museums are part of Lima's cultural scene and are the most visited in Lima:

• MATE - Mario Testino Association: Opened in July 2012, one of the world's most influential photographers is celebrated here in the bohemian district of Barranco.
• National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History (Museo Nacional Arqueología, Antropología e Historia Perú – MNAAH): This is Perú's oldest state museum, dating from 1826. It displays the most well-preserved pre-Hispanic ceramics, textiles, metals and organic materials in the county.
• Archeological Museum Rafael Larco Herrera (Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera): Itpresents the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Perú, as well as galleries about the country's pre-Hispanic history.
• Museum of the Peruvian Gastronomy (Museo de la Gastronomía Peruana): It is the best place to learn all about Peruvian cuisine.
• The Lima Art Museum – MALI (Museo de Arte de Lima – MALI): Lima Art Museum features the biggest collections of pre-Hispanic textiles and ceramics, pictures and furniture.
• La Casa del Chocolate - ChocoMuseo Lima (Cacao and Chocolate Museum): It features an exposition about the history of cacao and its production process, as well as daily workshops.
• Museo de arte contemporáneo: Opened in 2013, it includes abstract expressionism, geometric art, constructivism, conceptual and optical art, and pieces influenced by surrealism and pop art from the 50s.
