Customs and import

Customs officers in Perú are allowed to carry out selective checks on all travellers at all points of entry (air, land and sea). These checks are to ensure that you are not carrying prohibited or restricted goods, and to combat smuggling.

In case of imported livestock, for example, the following products can enter as accompanied luggage properly packaged and labelled and without any previous Sanitary Import Permit or Sanitary Certificate of Exportation (as long as they do not come from countries with sanitary restrictions).

Animal origin products and by-products such as fresh meat, fresh cheeses, etc; must have the SENASA Import Permit and an Export Sanitary Certificate from the country of origin, complying with the requirements of their permit.

Check the special requirement for each specific product and their country of origin in SENASA webpage.

Bringing Pets to Perú

According to the information provided by the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA), the original Sanitary Certificate of Exportation issued by the Official Authority of the country of origin is required in order to enter pets into the country (only applies to dogs and cats). This certificate should have the following information properly detailed:

Upon arrival in Peruvian territory, the pet will be subject to an inspection by SENASA (once you pay the inspection and entry document fees – 99PEN/US$30). Pets coming from a country that make a stopover before reaching Perú as a final destination must have the aforementioned certificate issued by the Official Authority of the country of origin and not by the country where the "transit" is made.

If you have any questions about the requirements indicated, please visit SENASA webpage (only in Spanish) or contact them by telephone at (0051-1) 313-3324, in order to avoid possible inconveniences.

For more information on moving with your pet please also refer to the article on Expat Pets on EasyExpat blog.

Bringing Other Animals to Peru

Only pets and cats are considered domestic pets. In the case of other animal species such as birds, rodents, primates, reptiles, etc., they must travel with the Sanitary Import Permit (PSI) and the authorization of the Quarantine Area issued by SENASA (obtained before boarding), as well as the Sanitary Certificate issued by the Official Authority of the country of origin fulfilling the requirements attached to the PSI.

Check here the requirements that apply to every specific animal in the following link (in Spanish).

Travel with Pets to Peru

Some airlines allow pets to travel in an airplane's cabin when their cage is small enough to fit under your seat. Small birds may also be able to travel in the cabin, but tropical birds such as parrots are usually not allowed.

If your pet's cage does not fit under your seat, you will have to ship it as checked baggage. Since the outside air temperature also affects the temperature in the cargo bay, airlines may restrict the transportation of pets during certain times of the year. Make sure you get detailed information from your preferred airlines before purchasing a cage or kennel.

Before leaving, we recommend you to acquaint your animal with the kennel or container. Add some familiar toys or some of your clothing items, so your pet has a sense of familiarity during the transport. Sedation of your pet during the trip is generally not recommended and should only be used as a last resort.

There are also pet relocation services that figure out all the details of the move. These services tend to be quite expensive, but take away the stress of doing it yourself.

Quarantine in Peru

Animals that are fully complainant will not be required to enter quarantine. Compliance checks will be performed on arrival before the animals are released to the owner.

Pets entering Perú will require the original Sanitary Certificate of Exportation issued by the Official Authority of the country of origin, as has been described at the beginning of this section.

See that, pets arriving without proper documents will be quarantined or sent back to the point of origin.
