What is a Volunteer Job?

Volunteer service contributes to the well-being of an individual and the community and is usually coordinated by a non-profit or public-sector organization. These positions rarely offer any salary or wage.

Volunteering internationally offers an intimate perspective into a country, a chance to work with people from around the world, and unparalleled experiences.

Volunteering in Panama

Volunteer work can be desirable if you are unable to gain legal work in the Panama or wish to gain skills or experience (You would still need an entry visa if you require one). Although unpaid, board and lodging may be provided.

Application depends on the organization. Most groups require a formal application, a personal statement, and often a deposit. There are periodic deadlines, so check the organization's sites to find out the deadline.

Volunteer Programs on Panama

Hablaya Panama
Established in 2005, Hablaya is a language school that takes a different approach to learning by using activities such as yoga, salsa dancing, movie nights and dinner parties.

Give and Surf
This is a program based in Bocas del Toro where volunteers assist with language classes and recreational activities for kids of Bocas.

Casa Esperanza
As one of the largest and most influential NGOs in Panama, Casa Esperanza helps young people who not only live in extreme poverty, but are also burdened with helping to provide for their family. The organization provides academic support, primary healthcare, nutrition, personal and social development, sports and culture.

Aprojusan
This is an organization that focuses on the youth of Casco Viejo by striving to create a safe and healthy environment for children at risk of violence and drugs.

Insurance Abroad

Many volunteer programs also handle visa arrangements and include insurance coverage in their program fees or as part of their compensation. If they do not, you will need to shop around for rates and coverage. Ask for a letter of introduction and prepare to shop around for best rates and coverage.
