Social Security

Social security in Mozambique is managed by the Instituto Nacional de Segurança Social de Moçambique (INSS).

Contributions

In Mozambique, social security contributions total 7%, taxed on gross salaries. Employees make a monthly payment of 3%, while employers withhold 4%.

Benefits

In 2007, Mozambique adopted a new set of labour laws that greatly improved the protection given to workers. However, many in Mozambique are employed informally or are unaware of their rights, meaning these regulations are not often followed.

Statutory Sick Pay

Employees are legally entitled to sick leave as follows:

Employers do not need to pay sick leave if the employee has been absent for more than 2 consecutive days and fails to provide a doctor's note.

Maternity Leave and Maternity Pay

Female workers are entitled to 60 days of consecutive maternity leave, which can begin up to 20 days before the expected delivery date. They are also entitled to a 1 hour per day breastfeeding break for the year following the birth of the child.

Male workers are provided with 1 day of paternity leave after the day of the birth.

Female workers with children are entitled to 30 'explained' absences a year, which can be used for events like the hospitalization of a child.

Compassionate Leave

Employees are given 5 days compassionate leave in the event of the death of a spouse, parent, child, stepchild, grandparent or stepparent.

Employees are given 2 days leave in the event of the death of a parent-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, son-in-law or sibling-in-law.
