International schools are some of the only places where classes are taught in languages other than Portuguese, most often English. Options in Maputo include:

• The American International School of Mozambique (American curriculum)
• The Maputo International School
• The Aga Khan Academy
• Young Gemynds International School (American curriculum for primary school and Cambridge curriculum for secondary school)
• Willow International School (National and Cambridge curriculum)
• Grandeur International School
• Ecole Francaise de Maputo (French curriculum with English and French education)

It is also worth noting that some expatriates opt to send their children to school in South Africa, where there is a greater range of options. Nelspruit is the closest major city to Maputo.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

The American International School is the only school in Maputo to officially give students the option to follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) route. It is taught under the supervision of the International Baccalaureate Organisation. All students study languages, social science, experimental science, mathematics and arts, and the qualification is recognized worldwide.

The IB is divided into three programmes covering the following age ranges:

1. Primary Years Programme (PYP) ages 3-12
2. Middle Years Programme (MYP) ages 11-16
3. Diploma Programme (DP) ages 16-18
