Job Hunting in Mozambique

Short term paid work can be difficult to come by in Mozambique, particularly on short notice and with locally-based companies.

In order to formally work in Mozambique, you must have a work permit before arriving in the country. This makes securing a job once in country extremely difficult. Companies willing to arrange work permits in advance are most often looking for longer-term employees, or they are sending existing employees on short-term placements to Mozambique. See the Visa section for more information.

As a result, short term work opportunities are generally restricted to the informal sector, which offers limited opportunities for expatriates.

Search Engines

Searching online in advance is critical to securing a job in Mozambique. A few good tools include:

You may also try local newspapers and their online sections: Noticias, O Pais, @Verdade

Forums and Networking

Networking is another effective way of securing jobs in Mozambique since often, search engines and organizational databases will not profile all the available opportunities. In addition to looking in your personal networks, consider checking out these great resources from EasyExpat

Student Employment Contract

An employment contract is standard for any working environment and in the case of student or short-term work; a student employment contract may be used. This usually imposes a time-limit between a student and an employer, with the student getting a salary for his/her work. Making a formal student work contract is not mandatory (it is possible to sign a standard employee contract instead), but may have additional benefits for a student position.

Discount Cards

The majority of destinations in Mozambique will not recognize international discount cards. Generally, they will provide local/national rates, and foreigner rates. Some will also provide student rates but there is again much variation on whether these rates will also apply to international students.

However, the following cards might be recognized from time to time.

Work Visa

There is no short-term work visa available in Mozambique. In order to work formally in the country, no matter the time period, you must secure a work visa in advance.

For more information, consult the section on 'Passport and Visas'. You will find information on voluntary jobs or internship abroad in our other articles on the left column of this page.
