Safety

Morocco is a safe place with few violent crimes, but there are issues with safety for expats and travelers. Follow common sense safety precautions by avoiding ill-lit areas, travel at least in pairs, and only carry the minimum currency on your person. Keep your eye on your belongings as one of the most common crimes is pick pocketing.

Big cities hold hustlers that prey on people traveling to Morocco, and Tangier in particular. People will approach offering to give directions, sell you something, etc. Politely refuse and keep moving and most will leave you alone.

Be careful when accepting free gifts from vendors. This may be a way to coerce you to buy something, or in the worst case, it can be outright extortion. After accepting a gift, a group may approach accusing you of stealing.

Women & Gay Travelers

Female travelers need to be aware that they may attract negative attention. Harassment usually comes in the form of cat-calls or hisses. If they are particularly aggressive, find a group, families, busy shops, or a local woman and ask for help. Some women choose to wear a hijab (headscarf), but this is not necessary as many Moroccan women do not wear head scarves. Do dress conservatively, especially if in the country.

Homosexuality is illegal and is punishable by up to 3 years in prison.
