The American School Foundation was founded in 1888 and is the oldest foreign school in México City and is the oldest overseas American School in the world. It is certified International Baccalaureate. By nationalities, the student body of 2,400 is approximately 60% Mexican, 26% from the United States, and 14% from nearly 30 other countries. Its 17-acre campus and facilities, as well as its academic and extracurricular programs, are similar to or exceed those in the United States. The school offers classes from pre-school to 12th grade in English and Spanish. One of the goals of the school is that every student become completely bilingual.
Greengates School uses more British English and is one of the finest schools in the capital since 1951. Following an English curriculum with teachers who are British nationals, Greengates caters primarily to the diplomatic and multinational business community in Mexico. Approximately 1150 students from 3 to 19 learn some Spanish with the majority of studies in English.
Other leading schools are the Westhill Institute, Eton School, and the Colegio Peterson. The French school, Liceo Franco Mexicano, is also excellent and offers a International Baccalaureate program. The International Baccalaureate is an educational program designed for international schools, from pre-school to high school. The program is used all over the world, but is catching on very quickly in Mexico.
