Unemployment benefits are offered to unemployed individuals during their search for employment.

Who is Eligible?

All persons in Malta who were employed prior to their application for unemployment benefit are eligible to receive assistance.

Other conditions for receiving unemployment benefits in Malta include:

Individuals who leave their employment voluntarily, or because of misconduct, are not eligible to receive unemployment benefits for a period of 6 months.

Self-employed individuals are not eligible to receive unemployment benefits.

Employment benefits may be lost if an individual refuses work with no justifiable reason.

How to Claim a Benefit

To apply for social security benefits in Malta, contact your local Social Security District Office, located in most villages throughout Malta. Malta's federal government web site provides a full listing of contact information for its Social Security District Offices.

Local Disctrict Offices are open in the Winter from Monday to Friday, 0800 hrs to 1200 hrs and 1330 hrs to 1630 hrs, and in the Summer from Monday to Friday, 0800 hrs to 1200 hrs.

To claim unemployment benefits, you must also register as available for work with the Employment and Training Corporation (ETC).

You can expect to receive your first unemployment benefit payment within 5 weeks of your application.
