Emergency contact information:

Safety

Malta is a very safe country; however, basic precautions should always be taken when attending sporting and public events.

Precautions should also be taken in Paceville, Malta's bar district, where police presence is minimal and incidents of drug and alcohol fuelled violence are not uncommon, including some incidents that appear to be racially motivated . Women should also take care when travelling alone at night, particularly in the Pacevillle area.

Pan-handling is almost non-existent in Malta.

Natural Precautions

Tap water in Malta is safe to drink, however, many locals prefer filtering their water using an at-home system or purchasing bottled water due to the unpleasant taste of local desalinated water.

When hiking in Malta, be sure to bring plenty of fluids, as temperatures can soar during the summer. Take care when hiking along Malta's cliffs, or when rock climbing, to avoid personal injury and falls. When hiking during the spring, take note of hunting season start and end dates (these change annually).

In the winter, stay away from the coastline during storms - foreigners and tourists are too often victims of the Mediterranean Sea's unpredictable waves. Take note of surf conditions at beaches during the summer months and heed the advice of lifeguards - there are several drownings in Malta each summer due to surf conditions, particularly at beaches and at the island of Comino. Always wear a life vest when boating.

Always let someone know where you are going and your expected return time when you venture out on a hike or on the sea.
