Internship abroad

Internships are an excellent tool for advancing your skills in a field of interest. These positions help young adults find a career path, test their aptitude for certain kinds of work, and further develop their resume or CV. Internships are almost always unpaid as the intern is gaining skills and experience. It is critical to find the right match so that the relationship is beneficial to both intern and company. Full time students have the easiest time finding internships because of their age, lack of real life skills, amount of free time, and education.

To secure an internship aboard, it is usually necessary to find a company that sets-up the internship. Internships are commonly set-up through a university for its students.

Internships in Kuwait

There are some opportunities for students to participate in internship program in Kuwait. However, many of the programs, particularly Kuwaiti businesses and companies, are specifically geared towards Kuwaiti nationals, not foreigners.

Search for Internships

There are no online search engines advertising specifically for Kuwait Internships. A search of specific businesses may lead applicants to the best results. Well established banks, telecoms, real estate, IT companies, insurance companies and oil and gas industries may offer programs to eligible students.

Universities, especially local ones (GUST, American University Kuwait, Australian College of Kuwait, Kuwait University) also offer programs for their respective students.

The American Embassy Kuwait offers Internship programs (excluding American citizens) to highly qualified candidates.

Newspaper

Several papers have a helpful classified's section.

EEK! (Expats Express Kuwait) is a subscription only weekly newsletter which also advertises employment announcements.

Networking

The old saying, "it's not what you know, but who you know" certainly applies for Interns. Socializing with those already in the company or business, volunteering for projects or simply involving yourself in every aspect of the company or organization can increase your chances of getting recognized by others. One contact leads to another and another and before long; you'll have created yourself a rolodex of personal references to use to your advantage later on.

Visa

If hired through an agency, the agency usually guides the intern through the process. Most interns receive a Student Visa. For more information on visa, consult the section on 'Passport and Visas'.
