Courses for Adults and Evening Class

There is usually no age ceiling at independent schools (including colleges) to register for courses at the post primary level. These institutions have day, evening and night classes but not for every course.

Classes with special admittance policies for people with relevant working experience but without the academic prerequisites are available. For e.g., the Mona School of Business has an Executive MBA targeting people working in top ranks of their field but without the graduate level certification.

NGOs - including faith-based organizations are among those offering courses for adults and evening classes. In many cases, these are remedial programs. The government runs a school for adults below their age level in reading or numeracy, Jamaica Life Long Learning.

Certification for programs using evening classes includes CSEC, CAPE, NVQJ, City & Guild, and Associate Degrees. The important thing is to check that the courses are accredited by a competent external examinations body such as CXC, NCTVET, City & Guild or the UCJ; or a professional association e.g., Real Estate Board. It is possible that some certificates count as credit towards a university degree. There are cases when a college offers a program that is a partnership with a university outside Jamaica; these courses tend to accommodate adults in that they are using evening classes.

Evening is after 5 o'clock. There are night classes starting at 7pm. The courses are fee-based. Fees usually cover tuition, access to facilities (e.g., labs, e-resources and maybe Wi-Fi) and handouts.
