Characterized by an absence of heavy industry, Rome nevertheless produces 6.7% of the national GDP and is dominated by the technology, communications and service sectors. The banking, electronics and aerospace industries thrive in Rome. Of course, tourism is Rome’s most notable industry, spurring the service sector and supporting the local attractions including museums, galleries and monuments.

The Italian film industry based out of Cinecittà and its studios makes Rome the hub of Italian entertainment. Rome’s principal business district is located in the Esposizione Universale Rome (EUR.)

Mayor Walter Veltroni is credited with boosting Rome’s economy by promoting tourism and the arts. To attract visitors, he started the Rome film festival and the Notte Bianca (White Night,) an annual all-night party featuring cultural events including concerts, theatre and exhibitions.
