Safety in Hungary

Violent crime rarely happens in Budapest. However, petty theft is very common, especially towards tourists. Tourists should be aware in crowded areas like the metro or popular tourist sites. All cash, cards, and passports should be kept in a safe place. Do not flash your money around and use an ATM in a well-lit area.

Women should feel at ease when walking around in Budapest. However, always use common sense and do not take unnecessary risks.

Men can be subject to scams by women who are working for other men. Some women may ask to take you out for a drink where other men are waiting there to rip you off of your money. Always check menu prices and trust your gut when it comes to strangers approaching you.

What to Watch for in Hungary

  • Taxis - Be aware of taxi scams. Fare prices are located on the side of the car. Many taxi drivers try to rip off tourists. Travel only in a yellow taxi with a taxi sign.
  • Restaurants - Be sure to look at the menu because some restaurants like to rip off tourists.
  • Pickpocketing - Carry only as much cash that you need that day, keep all of your belongings secure and be aware of you surroundings. Pickpockets and scammers usually work together to distract people. If suspicious people approach you, turn your back to them and walk away.
  • Exchanging money - Do not exchange money in the street. Many people can rip you off this way. Always go to a bureau or airport for money exchange.
