How to find a General Practitioner, doctor, physician

The healthcare in Hungary is financed by health insurance contributions and is free to all individuals who are insured by the National Health Insurance Fund.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is accepted in Hungary for emergencies. Most pharmacies accept the card and only the subsidized cost is payable for prescribed medicine.

General Practitioner/Doctor

Doctors in Hungary are properly trained and skilled at what they do. Most doctors speak Hungarian along with fluency or basic communicative skills in English.

Residents can choose their general practitioner for themselves and/or their children once they have received their insurance card. If you need assistance finding a doctor, consult with your local embassy for a list of referred doctors. You can also connect with other expats for recommendations and information on the EasyExpat Budapest forum.

The insurance company makes payment after the appointment.

Dentists in Hungary

Private dentists are the most popular choice for Hungarians. Many people travel to Hungary for dental work since it is less expensive than most Western European countries.
