Transport
There is an extensive network of public transit options in Ghana, offering up all levels of comfort. Tro tros are by far the most common mode of transport and they connect to the widest range of destinations for the lowest prices. They are, however, very slow moving and can be dangerous. Buses act as a second tier of public transit. They connect major cities and provide more comfort for a slightly higher price. There are also a few train routes available, though they offer few clear advantages.
Tro Tro
The most popular way of getting around Accra is by tro tro. These colourful minibuses do technically follow routes throughout Accra - though formal maps do not exist. The mate works alongside the driver, and generally communicates the general direction of the tro tro through a series of yells and hand signals.
Tro tros will almost always operate at an explosively full capacity. They are not known for their comfort or safety - but they are extremely cheap.
Bus
A more comfortable alternative to the tro tro is a bus. Buses are slightly more expensive, and do not service the same range of remote areas. However, they are far safer and much more organized.
Three major companies provide bus services in Ghana: Metro Mas Transit, STC Ghana and VIP Bus. The later two depart from the bus station east of Obetsebi Lamptey Circle in Accra. It is smart to book tickets at least a day in advance.
Train
There are a few train routes available in Ghana, though they are a far less common mode of transport. One route runs between Accra and Tema, and another travels up to Kumasi.
Plane
Kotoka International Airport (ACC) is Ghana's primary airport. It is located just outside of Accra, and receives a range of domestic, regional and international flights.
In Ghana, there are also airports in Tamale, Sunyani, Takoradi, and Kumasi. Domestic flights are operated by Antrak Air. Fly540 Africa formerly served Ghana, but it closed its doors temporarily in 2014.
Transport to/from Airport
- Shuttle: Shuttle busses are provided between the airport and nearby hotels.
- Bus: Tro tros are available a short walk from the arrivals hall.
- Drive: Chauffeured rental cars are available at the airport.
- Taxi: Available in front of the terminal.
Taxi
In Accra, you will have a choice between a private and shared taxi - both of which are found fairly easily on busy streets. You can either find one parked on the side, or flag one down from the road.
It is rare to find a taxi with a meter, making it essential that you negotiate a rate before departing. Expatriates are normally charged rates that are much higher than normal. Tips are not expected. In shared taxis, it is expected that you will stop to pick up other passengers.
Car Hire
Car rentals are available in Accra, and you have the choice of renting one with or without a chauffeur. Rental prices are often on par with Western countries.
To drive in Ghana, it is advisable that you obtain an international drivers license. You should also be prepared for more challenging driving conditions, as the roads are far less orderly than they are in the west. Motor vehicle accidents are common.
