Au Pair in Quito

Tools:

Although it is not very common, working as an au pair in Ecuador is certainly an option. In Ecuador, mainly expat families hire au pairs from abroad, for example to help their kids developing their native language (like English or German), but some Ecuadorian families also have au pairs. In most cases, you will be offered food and board plus a small allowance.

What the au pair must know

Basic application criteria depend on the family and/or the au pair agency, but there are a few typical requirements:

  • At least a basic knowledge of Spanish
  • In case of expat families: fluent in their native language
  • Be between 18-27 years old
  • Have a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to commit to at least a 4-months placement
  • Experience in child care
  • Be able to provide 3 references regarding your experience and character
  • Be in good physical and mental condition. Agree to a background check.

In addition to these requirements, it is common for families to ask for non-smoking, possession of driver's license, responsible or non-drinkers, and for females. Some families/agencies may also require time spent tutoring.

What the family has to do

The family has to welcome the au pair in to the family. Therefore:

  • The au pair must have her own bedroom.
  • The au pair will work to a maximum of 40 hours per week with a minimum 2 days off during the week.
  • The number of vacation days should at least two weeks a year, apart from national holidays.
  • They understand that having an au pair does not mean having a servant. However, au pairs may be asked to do some housework as agreed upon in the contract.
  • On top of room and board, the family should pay an allowance, with the amount written into the contract (Ecuador minimum wage in 2018: $385 USD).

Visa

Since a family is not a registered company, in most cases they will not be able to arrange a work visa for you. However, Ecuador has several options allowing you to stay in the country for up to a year or, if you hold a university title, two years.

If hired through an agency, the agency usually guides the au pair through the process.
