Unemployment Benefits

As an EU or EEA citizen, you are permitted under the rules of free movement to go to any European country for the purpose of seeking work. You will be permitted to stay in Denmark for three months while looking for a job. If however at the end of this period you are still unemployed, you will not be allowed to remain in the country.

Unemployment benefits: In order to receive unemployment benefit, employees must register in an approved Danish unemployment fund (a so-called a-kasse) that operates within their professional area of work. There are 36 approved unemployment funds in Denmark, 34 of which are for wage earners and 2 of which are for manager owners. An unemployment insurance is drawn up in a Danish unemployment fund. These are private associations connected to trade unions and other professional organisations. You can enroll into the fund if you are residing and working in Denamrk and are between the age of 18 and 63 years of age. Membership to the fund is voluntary but advisable as it provides you security in case of job loss.

To be eligible, you must have been a member of the unemployment fund for at least a year and worked for minimum 52 weeks full time during the last three years. You must also register as a job seeker at the local job centre on your first day of unemployment. If you are not registered as a member of an unemployment fund, you will not be entitled to unemployment benefit. Benefits differ according to the country of your origin.
