How to find a General Practitioner, doctor, physician

The healthcare system within the Czech Republic is generally up to international standards and of high quality. Many facilities offer English speaking staff. Coverage is provided to all citizens in the Czech Republic, funded by compulsory contributions to a state approved insurance fund. Considering the high standard, healthcare costs are well below the European average.

This level of care has been much improved due to the governments preventive health programs, which focus on immunization, preventing cancer, smoking and regular health checks. However, home-based care is still lacking. There is little provision for nursing services and the relief of suffering for terminal patients at home. Doctors seldom make house calls.

General Practitioner, Doctor, Physician

To find a doctor (Prakticky Lekar), first contract your insurance company to find out who is covered by your plan. If you have to visit a doctor who has a contract with a different healthcare company, your provider will reimburse the doctor for any costs, but only in cases of emergency. It is also an excellent plan to ask friends and family about their providers to find someone you can trust.

Getting an appointment should be as easy as calling your chosen clinic. You should be able to schedule an appointment within a few weeks. If you have public coverage, everything really will be free including doctors's fees and lab work. Prescriptions are mostly covered, but there may be a small fee. If you have another type of insurance, a co-pay may be necessary, and you will be reimbursed for your costs later.

For some people, the manner of doctors can be quite clinical, but professional. Many Americans who are used to a great deal of privacy may be alarmed by the lack of it in the Czech Republic. There are many reports of being asked to undress quite unceremonious, but just know that the doctor is just doing their job. If you very modest, prepare yourself mentally and relax.
