Most of the official Republic of Cyprus is well covered by 3G technology, and 4G now fully covers the five biggest cities of the island (Nicosia, Limassol, Paphos, Larnaca, Famagusta). However, reception tends to be spottier on the northern, Turkish-occupied part of the island.

Networks in Cyprus operate with GSM technology, so the vast majority of foreign phones will pick up signal on the island. However, roaming fees tend to be exorbitantly high, so most expats in Cyprus switch to a Cypriot SIM Card and local network.

Though most unlocked international phones should work with a Cypriot SIM Card, if you need to buy a mobile phone in Cyprus you can do so at several places, including electronics stores such as the Stephanis chain. These stores will usually also help you unlock an existing phone.

Mobile Phone Contracts in Cyprus

It's relatively easy to get a phone in Cyprus, even without proof of citizenship, and most people choose monthly payment contracts. As with most countries, different price plans are available. There are some basic points you need to consider before choosing the right deal.

• Personal Use: Evaluate how much you use the phone, when, where you are calling, how often you use short message services (SMS), if you use the phone abroad, etc.
• Coverage: Most important if you live in a remote place or regularly using the mobile while traveling in the countryside as most companies offer decent coverage.
• Fees & Rates: Each operator offers several different plans and options. Investigate the plans carefully and evaluate your needs.
  

Pay-As-You-Go in Cyprus

Many expats who plan to stay in Cyprus for a short amount of time choose the Pay-As-You-Go option instead of monthly contracts. Though this option is slightly more expensive, it makes it easier to opt out of your mobile obligations.

All three mobile phone providers offer the Pay-As-You-Go option. You can easily top up your call time by purchasing a card from the mobile phone provider's stores or resellers and kiosks. Most providers also offer Pay-As-You-Go cards on their e-stores, where you can top up electronically.
