Theater

Montréal's theater district is a vibrant display of the best on stage. Its proximity to NYC means that it has many large production shows. In addition, there are many community theatres and local productions.

• Place des Arts - This is a major performing arts centre within the city. It is the site of the Opera, as well as six halls: Montréal Symphony House, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Théâtre Maisonneuve, Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, Studio-théâtre, and Cinquième salle.
• Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM) - this theater company and venue is located on rue Sainte-Catherine in Montréal, Québec. It was founded in 1951.
• Theatre Ste. Catherine - Located in the Heart of Montréal's Quartier Des Spectacles, this theater is a multi-faceted, performance-centered cultural destination. The 100 seat theater presents live theater, music, film screenings, and comedy most nights of the week. Cabaret, circus, comedy, and drama all play out on stage. In addition, Sundays offer Improv.
• Métropolis - Offers consistent programming of concerts, plays, and more.
• Centaur Theatre Company - Centaur Theatre Company is a non profit organization dedicated to creating, developing, producing and presenting an array of plays.
• Mainline Theatre - The home of Montréal's wild Fringefest.
• Segal Center - Along with a full play schedule, Sunday Salons on the second and third Sunday of the month allow the audience to participate in conversations about the play.

Opera

The Opéra de Montréal performs at the Place des Arts theater complex in downtown Montréal, in the borough of Ville-Marie. The annual Québec Opera Festival is a highlight of the season.

Orchestra

Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) is housed in a new concert hall officially inaugurated by the Government of Québec. French music plays a central role, however other classics are highlighted throughout the year. The MSO and Charles Dutoit have received accolades for their numerous recordings, including the Grand Prix du Président de la République (France) and the Prix mondial du Disque de Montreux. The MSO won Grammy awards in 1996 for their recording of Hector Berlioz' Les Troyens and in 2000 for Sergei Prokofiev and Béla Bartók piano concerti with Martha Argerich on EMI, and additionally it has also won a number of Juno Awards and Felix Awards.

Museums

Montréal is a showcase for some of the oldest relics of the European migration to North America, to the best in Modern art. From paintings to sculpture to historical and technological museums, Canada holds a wealth of art and culture.

Montréal Museum of Fine Arts

Opened in 1860, the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts was the first museum in Canada built to house art works. The museum is housed in two beautiful buildings and specializes in European Art with a contemporary focus.

Montréal's Stewart Museum allows visitors to re-create historical activities in an outdoory environment. Focusing on the history of New France, the museum lays out the discovery of the New World to the Patriot Rebellions of 1837.

The McCord Museum focuses on Canadian history with over 1,000,000 objects. Special exhibits change every few months.

Pointe-a-Calliere Museum

This Old Montréal museum chronicles the birthplace of the city on the site of Montréal's first settlement where the St. Lawrence River met the now defunct Little Saint-Pierre River. Archaeology and history are explored in the many exhibits.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Musée d'Art Contemporain is an exhibit of contemporary works from predominantly Québecoise artists. There is also a traveling international shows.

Canadian Centre for Architecture

The Canadian Centre for Architecture is both an educational and research institute. The CCA encourages public participation in debating the art of architecture, its role in society and architectural theory.
