Brazilian customs regulations require those entering the country to declare upon arrival all animals, plants, food, weapons, ammunition and prescription drugs, as well as goods whose value exceeds US$500, and money in excess of US$10,000 (cash in any currency, cheques or travellers cheques).

If you’re only planning to stay in Brazil temporarily, but some of the goods in your possession are not considered by customs officials – either due to their nature, quantity or value – to be strictly for your personal use, you will also have to provide a bank guarantee. These restrictions also apply to Brazilians who are legal permanent residents abroad.

According to the Brazilian legislation an International Health Certificate (IHC) for all animals brought into Brazil must be legalized by the Brazilian Consulate seven days after its issuance, and the animal(s) in question must enter Brazil within 30 days of the issuance of the IHC. If you’re departing from the U.S., this certificate of health examination must also be stamped by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The vet’s certificate must state: the good health of the animal(s); a record of vaccines; that on the 40 days prior to the day of the trip, there were no contagious diseases reported in the area. In the case of parrots and parakeets, the certificate must state that the bird is free of psittacosis. There is a consular fee of U$20,00 cash for each document legalized.
