Sao Paulo

 Accommodation

Finding Accommodation, Flatsharing, Hostels

There are clearly a number of factors to be considered before you begin your search for suitable accommodation in Sao Paulo: your budget, particular needs such as schools in the area, distance to your workplace, convenient transport connections etc. Note that traffic conditions in Sao Paulo are usually bad so living close to your office or workplace will definitely be an advantage.

The most desirable neighbourhoods are in the west and south of the city: Higienópolis, Morumbi, Vila Olímpia, Vila Nova Conceição, Ibirapuera, the area around Parque Vila Lobos, Pinheiros, Pompéia, Itaim, and Pacaembu etc. Itaim is a relatively expensive neighbourhood due to the good shopping opportunities it offers, and it is reputed to have some of the best bars, clubs and restaurants in Sao Paolo; it’s also centrally located.

Renting is the best option, at least in the first instance, since estate agents’ fees are high. The Jardins area is beautiful but even pricier than Itaim. Pinheiros is more affordable and a popular area for expats. Moema is a quiet neighbourhood close to the Ibirapuera park – not the place to be if you like lively neighbourhoods however. The southern area of Brooklin is a little far from the centre but worth considering (many Germans have settled here). Ibirapuera is very costly, and with the exception of Itaim the centre of Sao Paulo should be avoided since it is not very safe. Avoid renting near one of the main roads, the traffic noise can be unbearable.

Flatsharing

An important trait in any roommate situation is having boundaries and a clear understanding of what each roommate requires. To protect yourself against potential problems should the worst happen, try to arrange it so that your roommates co-sign the lease. This makes all the roommates responsible for whatever happens to the property. If the worst was to happen, such as your roommate losing their job and not being able to pay rent, they will be held financially responsible- not you.

Short Term Accommodations

For short term housing before you settle into a more permanent place, there area variety of hotels, sublets, and short term housing. Pricing varies widely to accommodate the high season where prices can triple.
