Cinema

Rio de Janeiro is one of the primary settings for art in culture within Brazil. Multiplexes showing up to 15 films and art houses with just one screen are plentiful.

The biggest celebration of film is the international film festival, Festival do Rio. Two full weeks of international films, lectures and events occur across the city. Movie passes can be purchased by the day or for the whole event.

Nightclubs

Rio has an extensive nightlife scene. Clubs like Baronneti, Hideaway, Icy, Nuth, Zero Zero, and Catwalk are some of the country's and world's best known and frequented by celebrities such as Madonna, Ronaldo, Calvin Klein, Mick Jagger, and Naomi Campbell. Beer seems to be served at all hours of the day and locals can often be seen enjoying a drink with friends at the corner bars that spot the city. Many bars and pubs have happy hours for people returning from work or the beach and most serve snacks and light meals.

The real action in the city does not start until around 11pm. The clubs open to throngs of Brazilians and visitors drinking and dancing the night away until around 4am. Club entry fees cost around R$15 and cards are provided to record drink consumption (a minimum purchase of R$15 upwards is usually required). Losing the card can result in a forfeit charge, which can be as high as R$300. Beers are approximately R$5, while spirits or cocktails cost upwards of R$6. The minimum legal drinking age in Brazil is 18 years.

Bunker- This is one of the greatest nightclubs in Rio and attracts locals as well as tourists. Three rooms feature an eclectic range of music. Get there before 1am to guarantee entry on weekends.

Nuth Lounge Bar- A bit removed from the main downtown, the Lounge and bar are decorated as the Atlantic forests of Brazil. A jungle feel prevails onto the large balcony.

Lapa- On the weekends, this area's bars and clubs are eclipsed by the real party is on the street. People dance, drink, play instruments. Vendors roam the streets with coolers of beer. Be wary of bringing valuables as pick-pockets are prevalent.

Rio de Janeiro is well known for its live music scene. Samba, funk, hip-hop, and more light up the streets throughout the week.

Casa da Matriz
A young crowd populates this small house with two dance floors, bars and lounge rooms. The clubs plays music like indie rock, pop-rock, R&B music, funk, hip hop, samba, Brazilian popular music, drum and bass, reggae and break beat.
