Rent house or flat


Just as anywhere with real estate, location, location, location. Nightlife, beaches, and spectacular views can determine a properties price. Safety is also a factor in Rio as some neighborhoods have dangerous reputations.

These issues, along with knowledge of the local laws can make hiring a rental agency a worthwhile investment. They will research properties, arrange viewings, and finalize the contract. Many apartments also require 30 percent of the rent to confirm the reservation and an agency can help with this additional cost.

Including utilities, you should expect to pay R700 to R1200 a month (short term rentals are usually much more expensive). Areas such as Copocabana, Botafogo, and Flamengo tend to be the most desirable. The wealthiest suburbs are Ipanema, Leblon and Gavea.

Most apartments require a one year contract. This can be difficult when you are uncertain about visas and the length of time you will be allowed to stay. Leaving before the end of the contract can come with a substantial fine, as much as 10% of the remaining rent due.

Searching for a Rental

As with anything in Brazil, networking is often the best way to find and secure a rental. If that is not an option, there are other methods you may try.

Newspaper

Apartments are advertised everyday in the Globo newspaper. The classifieds can also be searched online.

O Dia Rio de Janeiro is a daily newspaper in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a extensive classified section.

Tribuna da Imprensa is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and covers local news, sports, business, jobs, and has a classifieds section.

Online

Besides online newspaper classifieds, there are many different search engines geared to searching for housing.

Visiting Possible Apartments

Try to make a good impression when looking at apartments. Arrive on time, dress neatly, and be on your best behavior. Feel free to ask questions about the space like:
1) How long is the lease?
2) When is the move-in date and how long is the lease?
3) How much is the security deposit?
4) Are utilities included in the rent? If not, how much are they?
5) Are pets allowed?
