Unemployment Benefits

In general, employees are well protected and it is not easy to terminate workers at will or randomly. Employment contracts are taken seriously. For example a fixed term contract cannot be terminated early unless there is grievous cause. There is also provision for lifetime and permanent employment as well as employment under a trainee or apprenticeship relationship. Some of the laws that protect worker's rights include the Job Security Act, the Disabled Persons Employment Act, the Maternity Protection Act, and the Paternal Leave Act. In the event that a person has lost his job, there is a good unemployment assistance and benefits system in place. If a person has been contributing to an unemployment insurance for a certain minimum period, has been working for at least 52 weeks and is registered with the AMC, he or she can claim unemployment benefits. The rate of unemployment benefit is calculated on the last wage. An additional income is added if the person has a spouse and children to support. The unemployed person can also ask for an advance on his pension if he so desires. For a more detailed understanding of the benefits, please click here.
