Darkness makes Buenos Aires come alive. People love the nightlife. After 11pm or midnight, the bars really heat up. On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, clubbers stay out until the sun comes up the next morning.  Of course when most people think of Argentina and nightlife, they think of the tango, which is the unofficial national dance. However, dancing in Buenos Aires is not just about tango; in fact, the majority of the younger population prefers salsa and European techno. Young women should take note that young Argentine men can be very aggressive in bars and nightclubs. Most of the advances are harmless, however, even if annoying.

For current information nightlife, consult the English-language Buenos Aires Herald, which is published in English and Spanish, and often features events held by Irish, British, and North American expats who have moved to Buenos Aires. Clarín, La Nación, and many of the major local publications also list events, but only in Spanish. QuickGuide Buenos Aires, available in the city's tourism kiosks and in various hotels, also has information on shows, theaters, and nightclubs. Ciudad Abierta is a free weekly published by the city government that lists cultural events all over the city, but it is in Spanish only. Llegas a Buenos Aires lists cultural, arts, tango, and other events. It is published weekly and distributed free throughout the city. Visit their website to plan ahead for your trip. The website www.bsasinsomnio.com.ar also lists entertainment of all kinds.  Go to the Buenos Aires City Tourism offices to obtain the "Funny Night Map," which lists bars and clubs throughout Buenos Aires.

Cinema

Cinema is the most popular activities chosen by locals. There are more than 200 cinemas. Some international chains have opened big cinemas like Cinemark, Hoyt's, Showcase and Village Roadshow. Films are shown in the original language with Spanish subtitles. Cinemas are crowded on Saturday but very rarely at other times. Prices may vary according to the cinema but the entrance is usually between $4 and $8. There is a 50% reduction during early afternoon from Monday to Friday and all day long on Wednesday.

Nightclubs

Discos remain open all night, finally closing by 7 a.m., however, in some clubs the after party goes on until noon. Young people often visit more than one club in a single night, and have breakfast before going to sleep. Entrance to discos is about $10 for men, in most cases free for women. Live concerts may cost $15.
