Finding Accommodation, Flatsharing, Hostels in Dublin

Guides: Dublin > Accommodation / Finding Accommodation, Flatsharing, Hostels
    9/04/2008

Most of the people in Dublin share a house or a flat. This is the best way to meet people and improve your English. Sharing a flat or a house with a few people is the most convenient and cheapest way to live somewhere when you have just arrived.

There is a lot of choice when it comes to sharing, but you should know that Dublin is a multicultural city with a lot of jobs. This mean that you won't be alone in looking for a flat and it can take few weeks to find a good one.

Rent for a house or flat is payable monthly and the price can be shown weekly (i.e., by calculating rent x 52 / 12 you should be able to find the price monthly). You may share a house with 2 or 3 other people. Most of the time, modern convenience are available such as dryer or Internet.

For a 1 bedroom flat in the centre of Dublin (zone 1&2) you will find accommodation around 500 euros a month with two months deposit. Charges are not included in the price. You should add electricity, gas and TV licence.

There's 24 zones in Dublin and if you want to pay less, you need to choose to rent a flat outside the city centre.

You should know than the South of Dublin city is more expensive than the North of Dublin.

For example, Ranelgh, in Dublin 4, is the most expensive part of Dublin South. It's a very nice area with a lot of restaurants and the new Luas to Dublin city.

The best areas in the South are Portobello, Rathmines, Harold's Cross and Ranelagh.
For the North ,Drumcondra, Glasnevin and Clontarf are some very nice area.

A good reference is the Daft (http://www.daft.ie). Be quick as the sooner you phone, the better your options will be. Daft is the most popular Irish website for flatsharing.
It can happen that after few hours, a flat is already gone!

FLATSHARING : A NEW WAY OF LIFE

Instead of living in a pokey attic room with huge rent, why not try shared accommodation? Frequently associated with students, sharing is spreading nowadays towards older established workers and covers people from 18 to 49 years old. Without falling into a community style of life such as in the 70's, you can choose to share an accommodation in Dublin for a bigger space, less expense.

Flatsharing is a way to meet more and more followers who choose to break a lonely life, save money or just find an affordable acommodation in a difficult market. This way of life has numerous advantages in term of money, practicality or social life. If for any reason you don't want to share a flat, for example if you would prefer not to pay a two month deposit for a flat or if you are in Ireland for just few weeks, a good solution is a youth hostel. There's thousand of them in Dublin, and most of the hostel purpose some night, weekly or monthly price. The main advantage is that you will meet people from all around the world.
