    Pharmacy

Many medications are available over the counter in Spain. However, a prescription allows you to redeem the costs. Under the state healthcare plan medications are offered at a 60 percent discount (free for pensioners). Doctors in the emergency departments of state health service hospitals will prescribe medicine, but do not issue official prescriptions. You should take the report to a primary care doctor who will write a prescription for you.

Pharmacies (farmacia) are generally open between 9:30 - 14:00 and 17:00 - 21:30 Mondays to Fridays; and from 9:30 to around 14:00 on Saturdays. There are 24-hour pharmacies and their information will be provided on all pharmacy shop windows.

    Dental

Most health centers have a dentist available for treatment. Dentists also offer emergency treatment in Spanish hospitals. If there are issues receiving an appointment at the local health center, then private dental treatment is widely available and prices are low compared to private treatment in other countries.

    Expatriate health insurance in Spain

With so much to deal with before leaving your home country, (taxes, moving house, paperwork etc.) the careful planning of your expatriation to Barcelona is an essential step. As far as healthcare is concerned, your local social security scheme won’t be accompanying you to your host country and, once abroad, you might be surprised by the care system you find in Spain. So, before leaving, make sure you have appropriate cover!
