If you’re planning to move to Greece for an extended period give yourself plenty of time to plan and meet any deadlines to avoid stress and last minute headaches. Check that your passport is valid for at least six months (your family’s too). Find out if you and/or family members need a visa and make the application as soon as possible if you do – this process can take several months. Check if you need an international driving license. If you’re bringing your pet make sure its vaccines are up to date before leaving with appropriate written documentation from your vet. Arrange your travel insurance and your health insurance abroad and keep these documents with you at all times.

Check whether your contributions towards your pension will be recognised once you move and if you are leaving for a long period it may be a good idea to give powers of attorney to someone back home so they can manage your financial and other affairs on your behalf during your absence. You may need to inform the tax authorities that you are leaving if you are permanently moving residence, although seek advice from a qualified accountant before making any important changes in this regard. Remember to give your new address and phone number to your friends, family and business associates and arrange to have your post redirected or collected.
