Hospital

There are a number of public and private hospitals located throughout Accra, some of which cater to particular populations or issues (psychiatric hospital, women's hospital, fertility hospital etc.). There is also the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. GhanaWeb provides an extensive directory of most hospitals in Accra and the surrounding region.

Under the NHIS, basic emergencies are covered. But, unless you are a resident, you should expect to pay for any services in cash or via your insurance provider, depending on the details of your coverage. Payment always occurs after treatment.

Ambulances are available; however, they lack an adequate number of vehicles to service the country.

Pharmacy

Pharmacies are readily available throughout Accra and operate with standard business hours. It is important that you confirm that pharmacies are legally registered with the Ghanaian Pharmacy Council prior to making any purchases.

Only certain pharmacies are able to dispense prescription drugs, and you can search the full list of available drugs on the Food and Drugs Authority Ghana website.
